Jeffrey Anderholm - Artist’s Statement
Sometime in the mid 1960s, my parents dutifully enrolled me - a young kid - in Saturday art classes in Hartford CT in an effort to help me discover what I was good at. Did I have an epiphanic moment or two? Not really. But it was fun to draw, paint and make a mess.
Over the succeeding decades of education, work and life I didn’t explore my artistic side much at all. I drew on my school book covers. Made some really compelling Powerpoint slides.
After a career as a software executive and a career as an innkeeper, I retired to the southern Maine coast. Suddenly, I had time on my hands once again. Then, I remembered that I liked drawing, painting and making a mess. So I took oil painting classes.
Today, I truly enjoy the process of creating art: conceptualizing, thinking about how to approach a blank canvas. The process involves emotional up’s and down’s — procrastination, excitement, encouragement, despair, rebounding from despair, and then a sense of accomplishment in the finished work.
Most of my paintings you see here are inspired by things I’m fortunate to see every day where I live on the Maine coast. I hope you find inspiration and beauty in these images as well.
